NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS WEEK (JUNE 5-11)

 

June 4, 1999

 

National Environmental Awareness Week will be observed from June 5-11 under the theme "Our Earth - Our Future - Just Save It". An annual event, the Week is intended to focus public attention on environmental issues in order to increase awareness and stimulate action at the local level. The Week coincides with World Environment Day, June 5 and World Oceans Day, June 8 commemorated each year by United Nations member countries.

The Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA) in collaboration with government agencies, Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other interest groups has organized a programme of activities to mark the Week. On Saturday, June 5 World Environment Day a Newspaper Supplement will be published in the Gleaner. The supplement will highlight information on current activities and projects relating to the environment. The Montego Bay Marine Park and the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park have also arranged special tours for members of the public on Saturday.

 

A Special Church Service to mark the Week will take place at the St. Paul's Methodist Church in Port Royal on Sunday, June 6 at 10:30 a.m.

A four-day workshop focussing on "Good Practices in Refrigeration" opens at the Vocational Training Development Institute in Papine on Monday, June 7 at 9:00 a.m. Parish Libraries across the island will host environmental displays which will be open for public viewing from Monday, June 7 until the end of the week.

A Special Media Awareness Seminar targetting media professionals will be held at the Terra Nova Hotel on Tuesday, June 8 (World Oceans Day) from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. The seminar is intended to heighten awareness among media practitioners of sustainable development concepts and issues. It also seeks to build relationships among media practitioners and organizations involved in the delivery of environmental education.

 

The launching of an "Environmental Design and Excellence Awards Competition will take place at the Terra Nova Hotel on Wednesday, June 9 at 9:00 a.m. The Retrieve All Age School in St. James will be the venue for an Environmental Fair also scheduled for Wednesday, June 9.

 

A workshop entitled "Greening of Government" will be hosted at the Terra Nova Hotel, 17 Waterloo Road in Kingston on Thursday, June 10 starting at 9:00 a.m. The workshop targets directors of administration and finance as well as property and office managers of government ministries

An Awards ceremony involving participants in the "Schools for the Environment Project" will be held at the Jamaica Conference Centre at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday,

 

 

The Green Paper pertaining to Jamaica's Watershed Policy will be discussed at a Public Meeting scheduled to take place at the Dinthill Technical High School, Linstead at 5:00 p.m. also on Thursday, June 10.

An exhibition entitled "Preparedness Today Safety Tomorrow" will be opened for public viewing at the Portmore Mall Block B on Friday, June 11.

Post National Environmental Awareness Week activities include a seminar entitled "Adopting to Global Climate Change" scheduled to take place at the LOJ Auditorium, 28 Barbados Avenue, New Kingston on Saturday, June 12. In addition, an environmental awareness workshop will be held at the Slipe Primary School in St. Elizabeth at 10:00 a.m.

The NRCA is urging the public to support and participate in the activities planned for the Week.
