NEWS ReleaseINTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEAN-UP DAY SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18
International Coastal Clean-Up Day 1999 will be observed worldwide on Saturday, September 18. The Day, usually celebrated on the third Saturday in September each year was initiated by the Centre for Marine Conservation in Washington, United States of America in 1986. The event sought to provide an opportunity for organizations, groups and individuals all over the world to participate in the shared responsibility of cleaning-up the coastal environment. A number of activities involving government and non-governmental organizations
have been organized to mark the event in Jamaica.
For the sixth consecutive year the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET)
will undertake cleaning of the Palisadoes strip in Kingston and St. Andrew. The Montego Bay Marine Park Trust (MBMT) will spearhead cleaning of the
River Bay Fishing Beach and the stretch of beach from Marguerittaville
to Cornwall Beach in St. James. The Negril Coral Reef Preservation Society (NCRPS) and Junior Rangers
in Negril will clean Bloody Bay Beach, Little Bloody Bay Beach and all
the fishing beaches on the west end of Negril.
The Negril Environmental Protection Trust (NEPT) will be engaged in the
cleaning of Little Bay Beach in Westmoreland and the Orange Bay and Green
Island Beach in Hanover. The
Sanitation Support Unit will spearhead cleanup activities of the Old Steamers
Beach in Sandy Bay, Hanover. The Portland Environmental Protection Association (PEPA) will be cleaning
the East Harbour Beach, Bryans Bay Beach, Buff Bay Beach and Woodstock
Beach in Portland while the Natural Resources Conservation Auhtority (NRCA)
will be involved in clean up activities at the Hellshire Beach in St.
Catherine. The NRCA is urging the public to support and participate in beach clean-up
