SATURDAY OCTOBER 2, IS INTER-AMERICAN WATER DAY

OCTOBER 1, 1999

Saturday, October 2 will be commemorated as Inter-American Water Day (IAWD).  The event is observed annually on the first Saturday in October by countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.  This year the theme is “Boys and Girls in Action” and focuses on the right that children in Latin America and the Caribbean have to safe drinking water.

Inter-American Water Day was launched in 1992 with the signing of the IAWD Declaration at the 23rd Inter-American Congress held in Havana, Cuba.  Commemoration of the Day is coordinated by the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), the Inter-America Association of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering (IAASEE) and the Caribbean Water and Waste Water Association (CWWWA).

Inter-American Water Day is aimed at highlighting the relationship between water and good health and is also geared at increasing public awareness about water and its efficient use.

One of the main activities to mark Inter-American Water Day this year will be a newspaper supplement published in the Gleaner on Saturday.  Other activities which have marked the event over the years included displays and demonstrations in shopping centres, malls and libraries, mounting of billboards at strategic locations and dissemination of posters and leaflets to the public.
