NRCA’s Response re- Gauron’s Food Processing Limited

NOVEMBER 2, 1999

The Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA) wishes to clarify its position regarding Gauron’s Food Processing Limited based on a report published in the Sunday Herald dated October 31, 1999.

During a recent monitoring exercise undertaken by the NRCA in the parish of Portland, effluent sample was taken from a holding pit located on the premises of Gauron’s Food Processing Limited.  Analysis of the sample revealed that the effluent was out of compliance with trade effluent standards for Bio-chemical Demand (BOD), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and PH as established by the Authority.  The flow from this holding area goes into a storm drain adjacent to the property.

Based on the findings, the NRCA made recommendations in order to ensure that the facility comes into compliance.  The recommendations which were presented to Gauron’s Food Processing Limited have received prompt and favourable response from the management of the factory.

The NRCA has not issued any warning or information related to pollution of the sea caused by Gauron’s Food Processing Limited.  It must be emphasized that the Authority’s initial approach in dealing with any entity which is out of compliance with environmental standards is based on collaboration and dialogue to ensure the necessary remedial action.
