NEWS RELEASE

APRIL 17, 2002

MONDAY, APRIL 22 IS EARTH DAY

The thirty-second (32nd) anniversary of Earth Day will be commemorated worldwide on Monday, April 22, 2002 under the theme, “Protect Our Home”.  Citizens and non-governmental organizations in the United States first observed Earth Day in 1970 under the theme "Think Globally - Act Locally".  An estimated twenty-five (25) million people joined clean up crews and listened to speeches in honour of Planet Earth.  Since then Earth Day has become a date marked by vigorous environmental action at the local level in several countries around the world.

Each year a number of activities are organized by environmental non-governmental organizations, schools and community groups to mark the event in Jamaica.  Earth Day is intended to focus citizens' attention on the natural environment and remind them of their obligation to protect and preserve the Earth.

To honour Earth Day, on Monday April 22, 2002, the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) will open its doors to the public between the hours of 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. to showcase its operations and activities through an Open Day and Educational Expo. This will give members of the public an opportunity to learn more about the Agency and meet the NEPA team.  The Day will include entertainment from the local culture including a Mento Band, Jonkunoo Band and Maypole Dancers.  For the children, there will be a Petting Zoo along with a Special Children’s Programme.  The various Divisions and Branches of NEPA will be on display through exhibitions and members of the public will get an opportunity to have their questions answered through ongoing seminars.  Staff members will also be available to provide the public with advice on Permit and Licence Applications along with free legal advice on environmental and planning issues.

Other NEPA activities for Earth Day include; the Launch of the Faith and the Environment Programme, a Media Consultation, the Launch of the 2002 State of the Environment Report and an Official Launch Ceremony at 4:00 p.m.

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) is urging NGO's, community groups, neighbourhood watch groups, schools, service clubs, professional organizations, youth clubs, consumer groups and individuals to get involved in activities and special projects in support of Earth Day 2002.
