Jacob Taylor Beach To Be Officially Rededicated
The newly refurbished Jacob Taylor Beach at Silver Sands in Duncans
, Trelawny is to be officially rededicated on Wednesday, December 3,
2003 .
The event gets underway at 2:00 p.m. and will be attended by officials
from the Ministry of Land and Environment and the Ministry of Industry
and Tourism and the Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Jacob Taylor Beach is currently managed by Customs Caribbean Vacations
Limited.
Formerly known as "Silver Sands", the beach was rehabilitated in 1999
by the Natural Resources Conservation Authority. It was renamed in honour
of the late Jacob Taylor, a former employee of the Natural Resources
Conservation Department (NRCD), in recognition of his pioneering work
in the development of beaches throughout Jamaica.
Taylor was instrumental in guiding the development and administration
of the Beach Control Act of 1956, which protects the rights of fisher-folk
and the general public.
Jacob Taylor contributed significantly to the emergence of the Jamaican
Tourism Sector based on sand and sea and mediated successfully in many
situations where conflicts developed regarding the use of coastal resources.
He served
for thirty-nine years, from 1956 to 1995, at the Beach Control Authority
and its successors the Natural Resources Conservation Department (NRCD)
and the Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA), both of which
were precursors to the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA).
