PRESS RELEASE - May 11, 2004
“Trash to Cash”…
…Environmental Action Programme (ENACT) Hands Over Waste Exchange Website to National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA)
The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) is set to accomplish its objectives this year. To aid in its efforts the NSWMA will receive ownership rights to the waste exchange website, www.wastex.org.jm. The website was developed by the Environmental Action (ENACT) Programme. Melissa McHargh, Director of Planning, Research and Resource Development at NSWMA, will receive the certificate of ownership from ENACT’s Programme Manager Jean-Joseph Bellamy, at NEPA’s Kingston offices, on Thursday, May 13, at 8:30 a.m.
The website which was launched three years ago provides a network for public and private organisations involved in waste management in Jamaica. This online marketplace offers solutions to waste problems which can provide financial savings through the re-use, recycling and reprocessing of materials. Through the website, Jamaican manufacturers are able to source and advertise waste materials for reuse elsewhere. It aims to improve efficiency, productivity and competitiveness; create job opportunities and reduce the rate of environmental damage through improper disposal of waste.
The Waste Exchange was initially proposed and developed by Professor Anthony Clayton of the University of the West Indies, Mona and was managed by ENACT since its inception. Following the hand over, ENACT will facilitate training of personnel from the NSWMA in managing the website.
Patricia A. Sinclair McCalla, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NEPA, Gina Sanguinetti of the National Environmental Education Committee (NEEC) and Secretariat, other members of staff of NEPA and the NSWMA will also attend the ceremony.
