                                               Fish Kill - Rio Cobre

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) wishes to make the following statement with regards to the recent fish kill in the Rio Cobre.

Our investigations have revealed that there was no pollution incident that caused the fish in the river to die.  The fish caught in the river alive will therefore be safe for human consumption.

The actual cause of the fish kill was a natural one.  The force of the water from the recent flood event created a channel in the embankment along the river into which the fish swam.  When the water levels receded, the fish became trapped in the channel and died from a lack of oxygen, as they were unable to swim back out and the water that had been caught in the channel dried out naturally.
