PRESS RELEASE - September 21, 2005

Oil Spill on Alice Eldermire Drive in Montego Bay

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) is responding to an oil spill on Alice Eldermire Drive in Montego Bay. The oil was released after an ESSO tanker filled with petrol collided with a passenger vehicle at approximately 11:30am on Wednesday (Sept. 21).  Enforcement officials from NEPA were on the scene shortly after the accident. The Agency is working closely with the Jamaica Fire Brigade, ESSO and the Parish Council to assess the damage and conduct clean-up activities.

Karlene Martin, NEPA Enforcement Officer attached to the Montego Bay Office, reports that the petrol which ran into the drains has made its way into the Pie River. This has necessitated the booming (containment) of the area where the petrol entered the water system in the Pie River. NEPA will continue to monitor the spill and conduct an assessment to ascertain whether there is any further damage to flora or fauna in the area and will keep the public advised as necessary.
