PRESS RELEASE - October 21, 2005

Crocodile Sighting on Ferry

The National Environment and Planning Agency is advising the public that with the rise in the water levels across the island and particularly in the vicinity of the Ferry main road and other swamp areas, the sighting of crocodiles is expected to increase. Crocodiles will take the opportunity to move from one section of their natural habitat to the next especially when water is in abundance.

We urge the public to exercise caution when using such major thoroughfares and to stay away from areas where the water level is high.  The public is also advised not to attempt to capture any of these animals as this might result in physical injury or loss of life.

The crocodile is an endangered species and is protected under the Wild Life Act and therefore carries a penalty if harm is done to the animal or if it is captured illegally.

Remember if you see a crocodile, leave it alone and it should leave you alone. Contact the National Environment and Planning Agency or the police if you see a crocodile outside of its usual habitat.
