PRESS RELEASE - December 02, 2005

NEPA appeals to the public not to capture crocodiles

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) is encouraging the public not to capture crocodiles when they are sighted but rather to exercise caution and to call the Agency or the police to have the animal rescued.

This appeal comes against the background of today’s retrieval by NEPA officials of a juvenile crocodile in the Majestic Gardens area.  It is believed that the animal may have been removed from the Jew gully (otherwise called “back to” gully) by residents.

Crocodiles are protected under the Wild Life Protection Act, making it illegal to disturb, capture, have in one’s possession or kill the animal. Persons found contravening the law may be fined $100,000.00 or sentenced to 12 months in jail or both, at the discretion of a Resident Magistrate.
