World Wetlands Day
Since the signing of the Ramsar Convention in 1971, the world has come together each year to celebrate World Wetlands Day on February 2. This significant day highlights the myriad ways that wetlands influence and enrich our lives. The day is also used to raise public awareness about the importance and value of wetlands.
World Town Planning Day
Our towns and cities are important parts of the environment. Hence, why it’s essential that excellent and proper planning become the norm for creating sustainable communities. Since 1949, on November 8 is celebrated as World Town Planning Day. It is dedicated to sensitize the public the value of a well-planned and developed area where the environment and its aspect of enriching our day to day lives is respected.
World Water Day
There are few things more important to the human race as a whole than the existence of water and how it affects each and every facet of our lives. World Water Day is celebrated each year on March 22. It is a day that we use to remember that important fact and working together to remember how water, as a sustainable resource, affects our lives and how everyonefrom all walks of life can work together to ensure that the world can have access to clean and affordable water.
International Day for Biological Diversity
Biodiversity is one of the things that make Earth the amazing and unique planet that it is. International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated each year on May 22. People from all walks of life come together to celebrate biodiversity and to educate the public on the role biodiversity plays in our sustainable resources and the importance it is to our day lives.
International Coastal Cleanup Day
Our seas are one of our most priceless treasures and that goes double for those who live on islands like Jamaica. Hence, why it’s vital that our oceans remain as clean as as possible. International Coastal Cleanup Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in September each year. This year it will be celebrated on September 17, It is a day when people all over the world work together to ensure that our seas remain pristine and beautiful for not only us, but also for the many generations to come.
National Environmental Awareness Week
Our environment is important. In emphasizing this, on June 5 each year is set aside as World Environment Day. Here in Jamaica, we celebrate the entire week, during which we strive to educate the public of the importance of the environment.
World Wildlife Day
Our planet is filled with innumerable flora and fauna, each playing its own unique role in shaping the world we live in. On March 3, the United Nations General Assembly decided to proclaim this day each year as the day of signature of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) of Wild Fauna and Flora ). It is also used to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants.
