NEPA successfully prosecutes environmental breaches in Westmoreland

The National Environment & Planning Agency (NEPA) has successfully prosecuted a Westmoreland resident for breaching the Beach Control Act (BCA).
Charges were brought against Mr. Shirley Rowe for having an encroachment on the foreshore and floor of the sea under Section 5 (1) of the BCA. A groyne was erected on a beach in the community of Cave, Westmoreland without a licence.
The defendant was found guilty and sentenced to pay a fine of 100,000 or six month in prison. The case was tried in the Savannah-la-mar Resident Magistrates Court.
NEPA and the Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA) are urging commercial entities and members of the public to seek the requisite approvals before proceeding to erect structures, operate businesses or host events on beaches.
