National Wood and Water Day…Focus on reforestation (planting of timber trees) in Watersheds
October 5, 2012
Saturday, October 6, 2012 is designated National Wood and Water Day. The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) will collaborate with community organisations, environmental stakeholders and the business community to plant timber trees in three Watershed Management Units across Jamaica: Rio Bueno/White River Watershed, Black River Watershed and Rio Grande Watershed.
The activities will form part of a reforestation initiative being undertaken by the Agency in support of effective watershed management under its Conservation and Protection Programme.
Activities planned and dates are:
- On Saturday, October 6, at 10:00a.m. – partnering with the White River Watershed stakeholders and the business community to plant 500 trees at Happy Retreat in Breadnut Hill, St. Ann. The exercise will support the reforestation programme in the Rio Bueno/White River Watershed.
- On Saturday, October 6, at 10:00a.m. - partnering with the Beeston Spring Organic Farmers Association and community members in Westmoreland, to plant 150 timber trees on at Beeston Spring Demonstration Plot. The activity will support the Black River Watershed.
- While today, October 5, NEPA and the Maroon Council in Moore Town planted 150 trees on lands in the Rio Grande Watershed in Portland. The trees have been donated by the Forestry Department which spearheads the National Tree Planting Day today October 5.
