NEPA Serves Warning Notice On Digicel

June 16, 2015

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) today served the telecommunication provider, Digicel with a warning notice for discharging polluting matter into a water body without a licence.

This follows investigation by a team from NEPA in the vicinity of Victoria Pier following reports of an oil spill. Preliminary investigations found a diesel oil spill from a fuel line at the Digicel headquarters in Downtown Kingston that supplies the company's generator.

The oil traversed the storm drain which empties into the Kingston Harbour. The team is reporting that the oil spill is fully contained. The incident has left an oil sheen in the vicinity of the Victoria Pier which should dissipate naturally.

The Agency continues to monitor the situation to determine any effect on the marine life and to ensure that the clean-up operations are completed.
