Retreat Beach

Retreat Beach is a public recreational beach located in the community of Lyssons, St Thomas. It is located approximately 10 km from the town of Port Morant in the outskirts of Morant Bay. The beach is open to the public and is also used in conjunction with the Whispering Bamboo Cove Resort adjacent to the beach.

Description & Environmental Features

The beach is characterised by medium to course brown sand mixed with cobble stones of varying sizes. The beach is severely eroded with raised reef rocks along the shoreline of the beach and directly within the swim area. The backshore is vegetated with species of West Indian Almond (Terminalia catappa), Seaside mahoe (Thespesia populnea) and coastal grasses. There are several seagrass beds located directly offshore and a river to the east of the property that supports a stand of healthy mangroves.

Accessibility and Parking

The beach is located at the end of the Marine Drive just off the main north coast roadway, A4. There is no designated parking area, however there is an area along the road that can accommodate few vehicles.

Amenities

The beach is currently in its natural state, and there exists no infrastructure or food services to facilitate recreational use.

Things to do

The beach can be used a rest stop. Various attractions nearby include Retreat Park, Reggae Falls and Bath Botanical Gardens.
