Enforcement Notice - NWC to develop solution

January 7, 2011

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) is reporting that a meeting was convened on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at the request of the National Water Commission (NWC). The meeting comes in the wake of an Enforcement Notice served last Friday on the NWC for the release of improperly treated trade effluent from a sewer main on North Street, Kingston into the Kingston Harbour in the vicinity of the Bank of Jamaica.

The NWC has committed to developing a solution within two weeks to repair the sewer main which is also blocked. In the interim, the NWC will be implementing measures to remove floatables from the effluent flow and dispose of into a sewage treatment facility.

NEPA accepts the interim measures but will be holding the Commission to the timeline for full rehabilitation of the system. The Agency will continue to monitor the activities.

Members of the public are being asked to provide information which may assist NEPA in taking action against environmental polluters by calling 1-888-991-5005, 478-7957, 119 or the nearest police station.
