October 11, 2011

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), is now in the process of preparing the State of the Environment Report (SoE) for 2007-2010. The report will be published and launched by the end of the year.

The State of the Environment (SoE) Report is being prepared with funding support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and input from Government Agencies and Departments.

The SoE reports on the condition of Jamaica’s environment and identifies the major environmental issues facing the Island. It highlights the actions being undertaken island-wide by NEPA, Ministries, Departments, Agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in order to improve the environment and ecosystem functions. The SoE also indentifies possible areas for improvement in order to achieve a healthier environment and promote sustainable development.

The Framework of the SoE will be guided by a number of plans and reports including the Vision 2030 Jamaica Development Plan, the major themes of the Mauritius Strategy for the further Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States and the GEO 5 - Assessment of the State and Trends of the Global Environment.
