NEPA reviews options for safe storage of sodium cyanide from inactive gold mining site

July 27, 2011

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) is currently reviewing options for the removal and safe storage of the sodium cyanide presently stored on the inactive gold mining site at Pennants, Clarendon.

In seeking to ensure that the material is appropriately stored, NEPA has had to reconsider the use of the Petrojam facility as a storage site. A number of other options are now being evaluated with a view to making the most prudent selection.

The public is reminded that the mining site is still restricted and that unauthorized persons are not allowed in the area.
